TOTEMS display the owner’s crest, memorialize a Chief’s passing or record details of an event. They are symbolic of the northwest coast peoples’ art.
The BEAR is the subject of many legends and superstitions and is featured in many works of art, especially totem poles and button blankets. The bear symbolizes family and is displayed in many family crests. The bear was referred to by the west coast peoples as the “Elder Kinsman.”
