Sitting Wolf (1991)
There are several different legends and names for wolves among the Kwakwala speaking people. They did not kill the wolves for fear that some of them had human spirits within them. The wolf in this design (originally painted on a drum) represents four wolves had super-natural powers. A Hamatsaman had died and was taken into the woods by these wolves who were in human form at the time. They brought the Hamatsa man back to life and told him “You must live a good, clean life and bathe every day in the river or you will die again.”
